The Bellingham Blazers opened the USA Hockey Junior Tier II National Tournament with a 6-0 loss to Twin Cities Northern Lights during the first game of round robin play Thursday, April 4, in Rochester, Minn.
Northern Lights took an early 2-0 lead and outshot the Blazers 15-4 during the first period. Bellingham goalkeeper Cody Foster kept the Blazers in the game, keeping Twin Cities lead to two nearly 16 minutes into the second period.
Late in the second period, Northern Lights scored four of their six goals in an 87-second span to take a 6-0 lead.
Backup goalie Robert MacDonald replaced Foster in the third and held Twin Cities scoreless.
"We were a very nervous hockey team today," coach Mark Collins said in a press release. "We had a lot of turnovers and made a number of mistakes."
Bellingham returns to the ice against Northern Iowa at 8 a.m. Friday, April 5.
