Blaine's baseball team was longing for a win after dropping three straight heading into a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday, April 3, at Pipeline Fields.
The Borderites got that winning feeling back by beating La Conner 9-1 in the first game and South Whidbey 8-3 in the second game.
"It was good for us to win a couple ball games and remember how that feels," Blaine coach Sean Linville said during a phone interview. "It was a nice day to play a couple, and the ball games worked out great for us."
Dwayne Ortega and Blaine's bullpen combined for a two-hitter to help the Borderites beat La Conner. Blaine took advantage of several walks and got key hits from Matt Vogee, who went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and two RBI, and Tyler Kelley, who batted 2 for 4 with a RBI.
"We played solid in the field and had an error-free game," Linville said.
Zach Rector made the difference-making hit during game two against South Whidbey. Following a costly error that helped Blaine take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third, Rector hit a three-run double into the left-center gap to give the Borderites a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Tony Goucher earned his first win of the year, and Linville said his pitcher did a good job of "settling down" after giving up two runs in the first inning.
Ben Hodgin went 2 for 2 with a RBI and two runs scored, and Cody Gobbato was 1 for 2 with a RBI and a walk.
Blaine (6-5, 0-3 NWC) returns to Northwest Conference play next against Anacortes at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Pipeline Fields.
