The Ferndale softball team rebounded from a two-game losing streak with its biggest scoring output of the season, scoring 21 times to blank Squalicum 21-0 in five innings Tuesday, April 2, in a non-conference game at Squalicum High School.
The Golden Eagles got the bats going early against Storm pitcher Lindsay Pysden. Ferndale scored six runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and another four runs in the third inning.
"Ferndale came out hitting very well and executed some bunts to get runs going," Storm coach Loran Zenonian said during a phone interview. "They caught the momentum and have a good-hitting lineup."
Ferndale sophomore starting pitcher Scarlett Nyenhuis starred in the circle. The Golden Eagles only gave up two hits in five innings.
Renae Mader and Collette Brown highlighted Ferndale's hitting barrage, which featured 13 base knocks. Mader went 4 for 5 with a triple and three RBI, and Brown was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Audrey Carlson and Brianna Pride recorded Squalicum's lone hits. Carlson's was a double, and Pride's hit was a single. Both base hits came in the same inning, and Squalicum had runners at second and third but couldn't push a run across.
Ferndale (4-6, 1-2 NWC) plays Skagit County-power Sedro-Woolley next in a Northwest Conference game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Janicki Fields. Squalicum hosts Sehome in a NWC game at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.
