What a relief to read Lorraine Kaspirin's revelatory and honest assessment of our current educational system's failure to address the underlying issues of a system that continues to discriminate against the same populations over and over again, i.e., the poor, minorities, the disabled. In her March 23 "Whatcom View" she unmasks the current rhetoric about money, grades, discipline and and takes to task our current punitive approach leading to a rising incarceration of those who do not share the privilege of the majority. Her concerns regarding our ever-growing punitive stance as a solution to whatever ails us, resulting in a "pipeline to prison" result is what we have needed to hear. I applaud her courage in speaking the truth concerning an undemocratic educational system.
But most of all, I love her question asking "what are we teaching our children about our Democratic process?"
