In Washington, Initiative 522 will be on the ballot in November. I-522 pertains to the labeling of genetically modified organism food products sold within the state. Whole Foods Market will begin labeling GMO foods in their grocery stores within the next five years. Will Trader Joe's follow? Labeling should also include foods for animals, identifying "generally recognized as safe," and country of origin. These "full disclosures" in labeling can be done immediately without testing and approval by government agencies. Consumers should have the choice.
Thousands of years of evolution have established a compatible and intrinsic relationship between organic foods and the human body. After WWII, the use of chemicals, plastics and processed foods exploded. The next era introduced GMO, GRAS and chemical additives to food sources. On an evolutionary timeline, I believe the human body cannot adapt to the latter unnatural, unhealthy and sometimes fatal modifications and additives.
Rising rates of ill-health and associated costs, increases in conditions such as obesity, autism, cancers and more, are ever-present in the U.S. The EU had it correct (again) when it legislated labeling of all food products -- a stumbling block for the U.S. in free trade agreements. "The people" can be in control despite corporate greed, lobbying and inept politicians -- eat local and eat organic!
