LAUREL - Meridian School District is getting a new elementary school this year, but it'll have a familiar name.
The school will be named Irene Reither Elementary to continue to honor Irene Reither, who spent 40 years of her teaching career in the district and volunteered for 18 years after her retirement before her death in 1995, according to the district.
A committee formed in January to come up with names for the new school, with three finalists suggested to the school board: Irene Reither Elementary, Meridian Elementary and Richard B. Clark Elementary, inspired by a man who worked in the district for about 30 years as a teacher and principal.
The school board voted unanimously to name the elementary school after Reither at its March 13 meeting. The district's primary school had been named after Reither, but that will close once the new elementary school is scheduled to open this December. The new elementary school will serve pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students.
