In all this talk about women's rights when it comes to abortion, nothing is ever said about a child's right not to be born to a woman who does not want him or her. If she is forced by law or suasion to agree to have her child, I believe the nature of women is to raise him or her in a life of unmitigated coldness and indifference, if not worse. If the child is given for adoption, he or she will inevitably learn the crushing truth that he or she was not wanted. These outcomes produce lives of perpetual sadness and ineffectiveness, fill doctor's offices, and cost untold billions to society. That Washington is trying to do something about this in the face of the present climate of religious fundamentalism makes me proud to be a citizen here.
