The Lynden Christian boys' soccer team scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to defeat Mount Baker 5-2 in a Northwest Conference match at home Tuesday, March 26.
"Both teams fought incredibly hard," Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "It was a great 1A battle with both teams knowing that whoever won would put themselves in a good position. I think we got our opportunities and finished when we needed to."
Alex Tyska scored first in the 21st minute to give the Mountaineers (1-2-0 NWC, 4-3-0) the lead, but Toby Dalla Santa scored 8 minutes later to tie the game back up. Luke Reardon scored in the 48th minute to give the Lyncs (2-2-0 NWC, 4-3-0) a lead but John Douglas was able to score 3 minutes later to tie the game back up.
"Our possession was a lot better than it has been in the last few matches," De Ruyter said. "We were finally able to open up some space and get a few opportunities."
Ben Knibbe scored the game-winner for the Lyncs in the 68th minute. Trevor Kamena scored in the 78th minute and Dalla Santa scored his second goal in the last minute of the game for the Lyncs.
Lynden Christian travels to Burlington-Edison for a Northwest Conference game Thursday, March 28, while Mount Baker hosts Nooksack Valley.
