Registration is open for the second Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup and Expo, which is set for April 20-21.
The event features competitive paddle racing for kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards, as well as outriggers and para-canoes. Proceeds from the event benefit the Gig Harbor Kayak Club.
Based at Skansie Brothers Park and Jerisich Dock, the event includes races for all four categories taking place inside the harbor.
The April 20 schedule includes a 10k inner-harbor race and a simultaneous 5k race for novices and beginners, for all classes of craft. The events will be a non-point race. There also will be 200 meter sprints for each individual class. Athletes can compete in more than one class of craft. Points will be given for these sprint events, and will be combined with Sunday’s race to determine the overall point winner male and female athlete.
On April 21, the day starts with 100-meter “knockoffs” races for each individual class. After each sprint, 25 percent of the field will be eliminated. Athletes can compete in more than one class. Points will be given for the sprint events. There also will be a 200 meter relay. Teams will be selected at random and will consist of one each canoe, kayak, standup paddleboard (12.16 and 14), and outrigger canoes.
There also will be vendor and information booths in the park. The expo gives competitors and visitors an opportunity to try out equipment and view new boats.
Registration is $30 for adults and $20 for youths (18 and younger).
