If the Forestry Advisory Committee is established by the Whatcom County Council on Tuesday, March 26, it would give the timber industry a more direct hand in shaping land policies on and near forestlands.
Foresters pushed the council last month to write the membership requirements so that people antagonistic to logging interests couldn't join the committee. The current proposal calls for the 11 members to include eight industry representatives, a state employee and two citizens "with forestry expertise." They would be appointed by the council to the volunteer positions.
Council will discuss the proposal at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Finance and Administrative Services Committee. The vote on creating the committee is scheduled for 7 p.m. Council meets in the county courthouse, 311 Grand Ave., Bellingham.
