Brooke Bonsen struck out six and allowed two hits, as the Lynden softball team beat Meridian 5-0 in a pitching and defensive battle on Thursday, March 21, in the Northwest Conference season opener for both teams.
"I thought the game was a lot closer than the 5-0 score indicated," Meridian coach Tony Johnson said in a phone interview. "We made some outstanding defensive plays. Lynden also flashed some good leather and took a few hits away from us, and Brooke was Brooke. ... I thought Juliana (Magliano) also pitched a good game for us. Her effort was there, and she never quit. She was throwing strikes."
Magliano allowed five hits and struck out three.
Trisha Snydar led the Lions offensively, going 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, while Tanna Benson was 2-3 with a run.
Lynden (3-2, 1-0 NWC) next travels to Anacortes on Saturday, March 23, to face the Seahawks and Sehome in non-league games, while Meridian (2-3, 0-1) hosts Ferndale on Saturday.
