Lynden draws late penalty, ties Bellingham 1-1

Published: March 21, 2013

Logan Smith converted a penalty kick to help the Lynden boys' soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Bellingham on Wednesday, March 20, in Lynden in a Northwest Conference game.

Bellingham (1-0-1 NWC, 4-0-1) scored first in the third minute of play after a failed clearance bounced off a Bellingham player and into the goal.

"It was a pretty even battle in awful conditions," Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. "It was a well played game by both sides. It was a lot of hard work with a lot of tackles and both teams giving everything they had."

Gerardo Quiroz was taken down in the box to set up the Lynden (0-0-2 NWC, 1-1-4) penalty kick.

"Gerardo really stood out," Smiley said. "It was his first game with us and he had been hurt until then and did a great job in the middle of the park."

Both Bellingham and Lynden play on Friday, March 22, with the Red Raiders hosting Lynden Christian and the Lions traveling to Squalicum. Both are Northwest Conference matchups.
