Comment deadline extended on Owyhee wilderness

Published: March 20, 2013

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has extended the public comment period for the wilderness plan for the Owyhees through May 31.

It came at the request of the Owyhee County Commission.

The Draft Wilderness and Wild and Scenic River Management Plan addresses six wilderness areas and 16 wild and scenic river segments located in Owyhee County.

The plan affects wilderness areas made up of about 518,000 acres and 325 miles of river segments.

Due to their proximity, comparable natural and cultural resources, and similar management issues, the BLM completed one plan to address all six wilderness areas, as well as the 16 wild and scenic river segments that are located almost entirely within the wilderness areas.

The draft plan is designed to guide the management of the wilderness areas and wild and scenic river segments for the next 10 years. If you love the Owyhees wilderness, you need to take a look at the plan.
