Poor defense downs Nooksack, 9-8

Published: March 17, 2013

The Nooksack Valley boys' baseball team couldn't overcome its sloppy play, losing to Coupeville 9-8 in the 10th inning Saturday, March 16, at Coupeville High School.

The Pioneers opened the game by scoring in each of the first six innings, including three in the top of the first.

"We jumped all over them, and we were hitting the ball pretty well, and we've been hitting the ball pretty well," Nooksack coach Scott Gelwicks said in a phone interview.

Nooksack's defense wasn't nearly as solid, though, committing eight errors in the game and helping Coupeville score five in the sixth to edge back into the game.

"We made some mistakes at the wrong time," Gelwicks said. "It's one of those things we have to learn to get past."

After knotting the game up at 8-all in the seventh, Coupeville struck in the bottom of the 10th to win it.

Brandon Gwinner drove in two, and Brady Wood had two of the team's eight hits. Gwinner also tossed four innings of one-run ball.

The Pioneers'(1-1) next game is at Lynden Christian on Wednesday, March 20.
