Nooksack's defense shines in 1-0 win over Baker

Published: March 17, 2013

The Nooksack boys' soccer team held Mount Baker scoreless en route to a 1-0 win Saturday, March 16, at Nooksack Elementary School.

Luke Vanwingerden scored the game's lone goal in the 15th minute in a one-on-one with Baker's goalkeeper.

"We sent the ball through the middle of (Baker's) defense, and he just out ran the defense from behind," Pioneers coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview.

Villalobos said he was focusing on the team's defense heading into the matchup with the Mountaineers.

"(Baker) was confident they were going to come and beat us, and we worked hard on our defense because they have good forwards," Villalobos said. "It was back and forth, back and forth the whole game."

Both the Pioneers (1-1) and the Mountaineers (2-1) play Monday, March 18, with Nooksack heading to Sedro-Woolley, and Mount Baker playing Bellingham at Civic Stadium.
