SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Sehome Mariners

Published: March 16, 2013

SEHOME

MARINERS

Coach: Jim Emerson

Last Year: Finished fifth in the Class 2A Northwest Conference standings with a 7-6 record. ... Ended season after going 0-2 in the Class 2A State Tournament and finished 12-14 overall.

Players to watch: Rachel Albert (sr., SS); Hallie Messenger (sr., OF); Meagan McIntyre (sr., P); Gabby Gorosave (so., IF); Mallory Kruzich (so., P/IF)

Outlook: Senior Rachel Albert gives the Mariners one of the top athletes in Whatcom County at the coveted shortstop position. Senior Meagan McIntyre returns to the circle after several successful years of pitching. Senior Hallie Messenger has a strong bat and anchors the Mariners' outfield. Those are three players in three key spots Sehome can, and will, rely on to lead the club. Coach Jim Emerson also has a stable of talented sophomores and a pair of juniors that played last year and now have a year of experience. All-NWC do-everything player Gabby Gorosave, who hit for a .522 average a year ago, is one of those talented underclassmen. "Probably not much more than anybody else, we're going to try to not beat ourselves," Emerson said in a phone interview. "I think there is a lot of potential." Emerson said many of his players also play basketball, and the softball team is still trying to get out of winter sports-season mode, but once Sehome can get a few more outside practices in, Emerson said the Mariners "should be alright."
