SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Squalicum Storm

Published: March 16, 2013

SQUALICUM

STORM

Coach: Loran Zenonian

Last Year: Finished eighth in the Class 2A Northwest Conference standings with a 0-13 record. ... Did not qualify for postseason and finished 2-17 overall.

Players to watch: Lindsay Pysden (sr., IF); Lauren Eckert (jr., OF); Gina Kim (jr., OF); Briana Lagerwey (fr., P), Hannah Kim (sr., IF)

Outlook: The Storm are left with a lot of new faces this year after Squalicum graduated five key seniors, and last season was a struggle in terms of wins and losses. Squalicum is in the midst of a rebuilding year, but players like senior captain Lindsay Pysden and junior all-around athlete Lauren Eckert will certainly helped the Storm be competitive. "It's not how you start, it's how you finish," Squalicum coach Loran Zenonian said in a phone interview. "The season is long, and we tell them Squalicum has a chance to build together and get better. It's got to start with consistency and getting better every practice or game." Senior Hannah Kim is expected to make an impact in the Storm's infield, and junior Gina Kim is a promising player Zenonian plans to work in the outfield. First baseman Brianna Pride is Squalicum's third senior, and seven of the Storm's 12 varsity players are underclassmen. Of those seven, freshman pitcher Briana Lagerwey is slated to combine with Pysden in the circle.
