SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Meridian Trojans

Published: March 16, 2013

MERIDIAN

TROJANS

Coach: Tony Johnson

Last year: Finished third in the Class 1A Northwest Conference standings with a 2-11 record. ... Ended season after going 0-2 in the Class 1A State Tournament and finished 12-18 overall.

Players to watch: Victoria Coe (sr., IF); Angela Roderick (sr., C/IF); Juliana Magliano (sr., P/OF); Kendra Holmes (jr., IF)

Outlook: Coach Tony Johnson admitted reaching the state tournament was a "fantastic accomplishment" last year, but Meridian hasn't spoken of it this season. The Trojans are focused on the task at hand, and that's getting better, drilling fundamentals, having fun and competing. "Our goal is to be playing the best at the end of the year and show that in our last games," Johnson said in a phone interview. Three-year varsity players Victoria Coe, Angela Roderick, Juliana Magliano and Kendra Holmes will undoubtedly help determine if Meridian is playing its best ball in late April, early May. In a game where having a strong pitcher is key component to team success, Meridian has a good one in Magliano. "Juliana threw four great innings in our first game, and she has a drop and screw ball," Johnson said. "She had a lot that was working." Ashley Veenstra is expected to play center field and should have a more expanded role this season. Madeline Gray, Keanna Waugh and McKenna Smith are three underclassmen Johnson is excited about.
