Duo pushes Meridian over Blaine 2-1

The Meridian boys' soccer team opened up its season with a 2-1 victory over Blaine in non-conference action Tuesday, March 12, at Meridian High School.

Junior Castro notched the Trojans' first goal in the ninth minute off an assist by Tomas Alvarado to take a 1-0 lead. The pair was at it again the next minute, with Alvarado scoring off an assist from Castro to take an early 2-0 lead.

"It was a nice give and go on both goals," Meridian coach Joe Spencer said in a phone interview. "They're getting better and better playing together."

Blaine's Nick Butschli scored the Borderites' lone goal in the 39th minute.

The Trojans (1-0) travel to Anacortes on Thursday, March 14, while Blaine (0-1) hosts Nooksack Valley at Pipeline Fields the same day.
