WWU club hockey team headed to nationals

The Western Washington club hockey team will play in the National Association of Intercollegiate Hockey national tournament after winning the Northwest Collegiate Hockey Conference title Sunday, March 3, with a 4-0 victory over Eastern Washington in Cheney.

Tyler Zetting had his second shutout of the postseason and his fifth of the year in goal for the Vikings.

En route to the championship game, WWU beat the University of Idaho and Portland State University.

The NAIH national tournament will take place from Friday, March 15, to Sunday, March 17, in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Vikings open against Ventura County Community College District (Calif.) at 3 p.m. Friday, March 15.

COLLINS WINS TWO GOLDS AT TOURNAMENT

Wanda Collins of Bellingham won two gold medals at the United States Racquetball Association National Doubles Championships, which took place Feb. 13-18 at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.

Collins teamed with Paul Julbes of Seattle to win the mixed 45 and over division and won the women's 60 and over division while teamed with Terry Rogers of Las Vegas.

Collins is a racquetball instructor at Bellingham Athletic Club.

STEAMERS STAY UNBEATEN AT MIDWAY POINT

The Chuckanut Bay U19 rugby team improved to 6-0 halfway through the season after beating Eastside of Bellevue 36-22 on Saturday, March 10, at home.

Jacob Black and Titi Lamositele had two trys each, Wyatt Vasey and Luke Portillo had a try each and Jacob Hamm had three conversions for the Steamers.

Chuckanut also earned a 29-7 victory over Earl Marriott (B.C.) on Thursday, March 7, at home.

Anthony Fleck, Luke Portillo, Max Evans, Richmond Baardson and Jacob Black each had trys for the Steamers, and Jacob Hamm added two conversions.

VIKINGS RUGBY EARNS WIN OVER BOISE STATE

The Western Washington men's rugby team earned a 94-7 Northwest Collegiate Conference victory over Boise State to improve to 5-0 in league.

The No. 25 ranked Vikings had five scores from Matt Jensen, three from Gio Trujillo and two trys each from Kevin Kinloch and Nate Muir. Robert Boenish, Louie Henson and Prestin Mo had a try each.

Nick Salimano was 11 of 15 on conversions.

HONEYWAGON RUNS RESULTS

The 31st annual Honeywagon Runs took place on Saturday, March 2, in Everson. More than 250 people, ranging in age from 5 to 79 years old, took part in the event.

Michael Smith of Renton was the overall men's winner in the half Marathon with a time of 1 hour, 17.46 minutes. The women's overall winner was Karin Rohde of Pullman with a time of 1:27.14.

Jason Gulley of Bellingham won the men's 4-mile run with a time of 23.05 and Bellingham's Marti Riemer-Varga won on the women's side with a time of 26.08.

WILD GIRLS' HOCKEY TEAM WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Washington Wild U19 girls' hockey team won the USA Hockey Girls' Tier 2 Pacific District Championship and will play in the USA Hockey Girls' Tier 2 National Championships from April 3-7 in San Jose, Calif.
