Unhappy land trust involved with lake land

Published: March 11, 2013

Did everyone get the Whatcom Land Trust "talking points" flier in their mailbox? Did you note that they want you to make a donation to them? Isn't it interesting that this non-governmental organization has cash to spend on mass mailings, but wants a donation from you? Do you know where the Whatcom Land Trust gets its money? Do you know that the land trust gets easements for lands from our county and city governments to protect our lands from us? Do you know that they protect these lands in "perpetuity?" Do you know that the public discovered that there was an option to give the Whatcom Land Trust an easement to take care of the land addressed in the reconveyance? Do you know that our County Council implied at a council meeting last fall that they were not going to consider such an easement? I am concerned the Whatcom Land Trust will severely curtail or actually shut down "people" access to the proposed park lands once they get their hands in the pot. Why is the Whatcom Land Trust soliciting for the reconveyance? Do you think that they know something that the public doesn't know? What do you think "trust" means in the Whatcom Land Trust? In reality, I can only answer the last question by saying that I would never "trust" them with the rights to any of my land!
