PREP BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW: Squalicum Storm

Published: March 10, 2013

SQUALICUM

STORM

Coach: John Inge

Last year: Finished 14th in the NWC (1-12). Did not advance to the postseason with a 4-15 record overall.

Players to watch: Brad Alvord (sr. P/1B), Staley Gilmore (sr. P/OF), Matthew Forhan (sr. OF), Landon Tripp (jr. OF), Ben Johnson (jr. Util.)

Outlook: If Squalicum ends up looking good this spring, just wait until next year. Yes, the Storm has only five seniors and two juniors on its roster. But Inge predicts he will start as many as four sophomores this year. "Our sophomore class is going to play a lot this year," Inge said in a phone interview. "We've got the most talent we've had in awhile - it's just young talent." Included among those possible starting sophomores will be infielders Tim Lann and Kyle Little, platoon catchers Ben Tripp and Josh Holcomb and outfielders Carter Nicholson and Coleman Schwab. Pitchers David Staley and Harper Moore also should see some varsity action on the mound this year. With that many talented youngsters, it's no wonder Inge is excited. "We had to take a step back last year so that we could take two steps forward this year," Inge said. "We're on the verge. Next year, watch out, but this year, I believe we're going to be competitive, too. We're just going to have to learn what it takes to be successful on the varsity level." With so much youth, Squalicum certainly will rely heavily on the few experienced players it does have, such as Alvord, Gilmore, Forhan and Tripp. "What a good group I've got," Inge said. "They've got tremendous work ethic. They want to work hard and improve."
