PREP BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW: Lynden Lions

Published: March 10, 2013

LYNDEN

LIONS

Coach: Cory White

Last year: Finished second in the NWC (11-2). Finished fourth at the 2A Northwest District Tournament. Advanced to the 2A state championship game, before losing to Archbishop Murphy and finished 22-5 overall.

Players to watch: Tanner Olson (sr. P/2B), Josh Kraght (sr. C/OF), Zach Vis (sr. SS/P), Matt Meyer (sr. 1B/P), Luke Christianson (sr. OF),

Outlook: Think Lynden was already going to be motivated to get back to Yakima after falling one run short of a state title last spring? Just imagine what finishing third in basketball did to the determination of a talented group of seniors. "These guys are great competitors," White said in a phone interview. "They like to play for this school and push each other in practice. They know this is their last chance as a group before they go off and play a variety of different sports." In certain games, the Lions likely will start nine seniors, and the names and positions are familiar, as many will be starting for their third or fourth year. The one area Lynden did suffer losses was on the mound, where graduation cost them their top two starters. Olson and Vis each pitched 20-plus innings last year and got three wins apiece and will be counted on for more. Senior Peter Bovenkamp will move up from JV to be another pitcher, and Shane Treloar has already shown what he can do in the outfield and will be joined by senior Ryan Mouat. Hudson Gratton also likely will be a new starter at third and see some time on the mound.
