Ferndale Golden Eagles boys' soccer preview

FERNDALE

GOLDEN EAGLES

Coach: Scott Browne

Last year: Finished third in the Class 3A Northwest Conference standings with a record of 6-7-0. ... Did not qualify for postseason and ended season 7-9-0 overall.

Players to watch: Michael Steele (sr., F/M), Luis Morin (so., F); Nate Sanders (sr., D); Wyatt Dunn (sr., D); Evan Bowen (sr., M)

Outlook: Five of Ferndale's nine losses last year were by one goal. The other four losses were by two goals. Despite a losing record, the Golden Eagles outscored opponents 39-31. Coach Scott Browne wants those one-goal games back this year, and Ferndale is "looking for redemption." Ferndale has plenty of returning experience with 15 seniors on the roster. The loss of last year's Northwest Conference leading goal scorer, Heath Sowers, hurts, but the Golden Eagles have an answer for the lost production. Forward Michael Steele, who played his freshman year before leaving for two years to play with the Seattle Sounders Academy U-18 team, is back for his senior season and will pair with sophomore Luis Morin and others to give Ferndale a dynamic front line. Senior Evan Bowen, who coach Scott Browne said has matured and gotten a lot bigger, headlines Ferndale's midfield. Defenders Nate Sanders and Wyatt Dunn are two tested defensemen who'll make life hard on opposing forwards. "There are no easy games for us, but we want to win as many games as possible," Browne said in a phone interview. "We have a lot of maturity, experience and size. That's exciting to see."
