FERNDALE - Two Bellingham men were injured in a head-on crash after one of their cars crossed the center line on Slater Road Wednesday evening, Feb. 28, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Darren Van Eaton, 50, was driving his 1997 Infiniti QX4 west down Slater Road near Imhoff Road shortly after 6:30 p.m. when he crossed into the eastbound lane and hit a Dodge Neon head on, according to WSP.

The Neon driver, Mark E. Dawson, 46, was taken to St. Joseph hospital, where he was stabilized and transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He remained in serious condition in Harborview's intensive care unit Thursday afternoon, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Van Eaton was in satisfactory condition at St. Joseph Thursday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. Dawson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, though Van Eaton wasn't.

Troopers don't suspect drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. Van Eaton likely will face charges for crossing the center line, according to WSP.
