Guard John Allen scored 19 points, including a driving layin for the go-ahead points with 8.9 seconds left, lifting Western Washington University to a 63-57 triumph over University of Alaska Anchorage in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Saturday, Feb. 23, in Anchorage, Alaska.
The defending NCAA Division II national champion Vikings, ranked No. 2 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 and No. 1 in the West Region rating, improved to 25-1 overall and 16-1 in the GNAC. They had a school and conference record 30-game win streak end Thursday in a 77-73 loss at Alaska Fairbanks.
UAA fell to 17-7 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Teancum Stafford led the Seawolves, who lost for just the third time in 17 home contests this season, with a game-high 23 points.
The Vikings had a 43-31 lead with 13 minutes to play, but the Seawolves used a 14-2 run to tie the score at 45-45, and neither team led by more than three points after that until WWU hit four free throws in the final five seconds.
Forward Paul Jones had 15 points for Western, which shot 57.9 percent (22-of-38) from the field.
