Whatcom County residents should be aware that regardless if you support the Gateway Terminal project or not additional coal trains are coming. The Westshore Terminals Roberts Bank coal export terminal just across the border is investing $210 million in new equipment to improve efficiency which will enable significant higher volumes by 2014. In addition, Fraser Surrey Docks has applied for a permit to begin shipping coal this year which would be delivered to the port by Burlington-Northern. Based upon projected volumes and public statements I figure an additional 2-3 trains each way should be expected next year. Information is available on their websites.
