WWU's rugby team earns decisive win against Oregon

The Western Washington University men's rugby team earned a 52-12 win against the University of Oregon last week in Eugene, Ore.

WWU's Kevin Kinloch scored two trys, and Robert Boenish, Jake Romano, Gio Trujilo, Nick Aliman, Quinton Williams and Nathan Muir each scored one.

Western led 19-12 before scoring 33 straight points.

The Vikings (3-0) face Central Washington University next Saturday, Feb. 23, in Seattle. The Wildcats are ranked No. 14 and play in Division IA, while WWU plays is Division IAA. Western's next home match is Saturday, March 9, against Boise State.

BELLINGHAM BAY SWIM TEAM ENJOYING RECORD-BREAKING YEAR

The Bellingham Bay Swim Team's championship meets are three to four weeks away, but team members have already put together a record-breaking season.

BBST swimmers have broken and re-broken 20 team records and have achieved over 170 new all-time top 10 swims.

Emma Carlton has made six record-breaking swims, Carlee Bock has broken three records, Cole Avery has broken two, Gus Evans has two, and Hunter May, Audrey Shenkin, Taylor Shewchuk, Andy Small and Tianna Varang each have broke one record.

"I am very pleased with the level of enthusiasm and dedication to the total team that our members have shown," new BBST coach Sean Muncie said in a press release. "Our age group program is developing quickly. Our novice, junior, and pre senior-level swimmers have taken on new challenges and have begun to take the next step in furthering their swimming careers."

BBST's next meet is this weekend in Mukilteo.

CHUCKANUT RUGBY GETS WIN

The Chuckanut U-19 rugby team earned a wild 20-19 come-from-behind win against Liberty of Seattle last week.

Trailing 12-0, Chuckanut's Sam Olney scored a penalty kick before Richmond Baardson scored a try to cut Liberty's lead to 12-10.

Olney added another penalty kick, which was followed by a Titi Lamositele try with 8 minutes to play that gave Chuckanut a 20-12 lead.

Liberty answered with a try and the following conversion cut Chuckanut's lead to 20-19. Chuckanut stopped Liberty 1 yard from the score line as time ran out. Olney was selected Man of the Match.

LYNDEN VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE SIGN UPS

Sign ups are open for high schoolers or eighth-graders interested in competing in the Northwest Youth Volleyball League, which begins Thursday, March 7.

Along with a girls' division, there will also be a boys' division.

The season includes eight games plus playoffs, and all games will be played at Lynden's Cornerstone Christian School's full-size gym.

Primary registration closes Tuesday, Feb. 19.

HOLE IN ONES

Golfer Bob Kendall recorded a hole in one Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club on hole No. 18, which is a 190-yard par 3. He used a 3-wood and has now posted holes in one on all three of BGCC's par 3s .
