Guard Corinn Waltrip scored a career-high 36 points, leading nationally ranked Western Washington to an 80-76 overtime triumph against Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Saturday at Royal Brougham Pavilion on the SPU campus.
The Vikings, ranked No. 9 in this week's top 25 poll, improved to 19-3 overall and retained their two-game lead in the GNAC at 13-1.
Guard Aubree Callen led the Falcons with 20 points, going 6 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 4 on 3-pointers.
Waltrip also had five assists, and assisted on baskets in the final minute of regulation by center Britt Harris and forward Sarah Hill to give the Vikings a 70-68 lead with 25 seconds left, but SPU forced overtime on a Callen layin with 14 seconds remaining.
The score was tied again at 76-76 with under two minutes left in overtime, but Harris hit a turnaround 12-footer that put WWU in front to stay, 78-76, with 1:12 left. SPU had two possessions after that, but missed shots on both, the last on a missed 3-pointer by Suzanna Ohlsen with 10 seconds left, and Waltrip made two free throws for the final margin.
Waltrip, who entered the contest ranked fifth nationally in 3-point accuracy at 45.0 percent, hit 8-of-13 3-pointers Saturday going 11 of 19 from the field overall and being perfect on six free-throw attempts. Her 36 points were the fourth-most in school history as she reached the 900 mark (912) in career scoring.
Harris had 16 points for the Vikings and forward Trishi Williams added 11.
Forward Katie Benson had 18 points for SPU and Ohlsen 13. The Falcons made 20-of-22 free throws.
The Falcons led, 35-34, at halftime, and held a 49-40 lead with 12 minutes left in regulation, but Waltrip brought the Vikings back with every WWU point in a 13-4 run, tying the game at 53-53 on a 3-pointer with 8:15 left in the second half.
