The Lynden girls' basketball team jumped out to an early lead in its 50-26 win over Sultan in the consolation first round of the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Sultan High School.
The Lions (13-9) will advance to play Sehome in the consolation second round at Mount Vernon High School on Thursday, Feb. 14, in a loser-out game.
"It was a survive and advance mentality for us being a loser-out game," Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview. "Our focus was coming out with energy and I was really pleased with our effort after the long bus ride."
Adams said the team was focusing on moving on from the regular season and starting new.
Lynden was able to get a 30-13 halftime lead before outscoring Sultan 20-13 in the second half.
The Lions were led by Kelsey Bouwman, who scored 16 points, and Stephanie Somers, who scored 15.
"It wasn't one individual but our team collectively tonight," Adams said. "For the first time in a long line we played well on both ends of the court for a whole game. I was really impressed with Kaitlyn Mark and thought this was her best game of the season."
Mark added nine points for the Lions.
