The number of Whatcom County entries into the Class 2A State Boys' Swimming Championships grew by more than 150 percent, as 30 individuals and relays received wild-card berths into the field to bring the county's contingent to 49.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association offers wild-card berths to the next fastest swimmers and relays that have not already qualified for state on time or through their district meet to fill out the field of 24 competitors in each event.
Squalicum received an invitation in the 200 medley relay, Lynden and Bellingham earned wild-card berths in the 200 freestyle relay, and the Lions got one in the 400 freestyle.
Five county swimmers were added to the field in the 200 freestyle: Sehome's Colin Hakeman, William Hutchinson and Jack Thompson, Bellingham's Martin Sloley and Squalicum's Jonathan Hegeberg.
Bellingham's Logan Dozal received a wild-card entry into the 200 individual medley, while Squalicum's Hans Kogan and Neall Koetje and Sehome's Joshua Larson were added to the 50 freestyle fields.
Squalicum diver Chance Gwinner earned a wild card, and Lynden's Robby Knapp and Bryton Snavely and Squalicum's Rylan Korby made it in the 100 butterfly.
Koetje and Larson also earned wild cards in the 100 freestyle, while Sloley, Hakeman, Squalicum's Andi DeKoster and Sehome's Trevor Nims will now swim in the 500 freestyle.
The 100 backstroke field now includes Hutchinson, Sehome's Calvin Richan and Bellingham's Logan Dozal, while Squalicum's Nathan Kamkoff and Jonathan Hegeberg, Bellingham's Gabe Travers, Lynden's Jonathan VanWingerden and Sehome's Patrick Lisosky received wild-card invitations into the 100 breaststroke field.
