Simon Fraser University held Western Washington University without a field goal for a stretch of more than nine minutes to break open a close game and claim a 74-59 triumph in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest between two nationally ranked teams Saturday, Feb. 9, in Burnaby, B.C.
Guard Corinn Waltrip had 16 points to lead the Vikings, who had an 11-game winning streak snapped. WWU, No. 4 in this week's Division II Top 25 Poll, fell to 17-3 overall and continues to lead the GNAC at 11-1.
No. 12 ranked Simon Fraser improved to 17-3 overall and 10-2 in the GNAC. Guard Katie Lowen had a game-high 17 points for the Clan, who have won 14 of their last 16 games and are perfect in 10 home contests.
WWU was within four points, 42-38, after a basket by Trishi Williams with 16:48 to go, but then got only two free throws by Katie Colard in the next 9:28. SFU used that to go on a 16-2 run to open up a 58-40 advantage. Carla Wyman, who finished with 13 points, had seven in the charge.
The Vikings battled back, eventually closing to within five, 62-57, on a Williams free throw with 4:13 left, but never got that close again.
Center Britt Harris had 14 points for WWU, and Colard added 12. The Vikings shot just 37.1 percent (23 of 62) from the field, including 29.4 percent (10 of 34) in the second half.
The 59 points matched a season-low for WWU set in a 59-57 triumph over SFU at Bellingham on Jan. 12. The Clan entered Saturday's game leading the GNAC in scoring defense at 54.7.
Marie-Line Petit had 13 points for the Clan, going 5 of 5 from the field. SFU center Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe had 11 points and eight rebounds. She entered the game averaging 16.0 points and a GNAC-best 13.0 rebounds.
The Clan made 10-of-27 3-pointers, Lowen 4-of-5 and Petit 3-of-3.
