The Blaine wrestling team won the Class 1A Regional Tournament and had nearly every competitor reach Mat Classic on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Hoquiam.

The Borderites took first place as a team with 217.5 points ahead of second-place Mount Baker and 11 other schools. Blaine also qualified 11 wrestlers to the state tournament.

"It was a great team effort for us," Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview. "We won all the tight matches to get that done. It was a pretty exciting tournament for us. I feel pretty good with most of our team going to state."

Three Blaine wrestlers won individual titles: Anthony Frey at 126 pounds, Caleb Johnson at 195 and Mikey Antczak at 285. Frey, a freshman, won by pin in 1 minute, 4 seconds; Johnson pinned his opponent in 3:30; and Antczak won by pin at 2:39.

Mount Baker's Tyrel Cronk also won the 182 weight class by pin in 5:30.

"I was pleased with Tyrel in his final," Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "He was physical and dominated his match."

Several other local wrestlers qualified for the state (top four advanced):

Moving on from Blaine are Kyle Gonzales who took third at 106 pounds, Billy Dodd (fourth, 113 pounds), Gage Lott (second, 120), Caleb Frey (second, 132), Christian Sharp (third, 138), Justin Belding (third, 145), Jon Stewart (second, 160) and Dwayne Ortega (fourth, 182). Advancing for Mount Baker were Shelby Miles (second, 113), Joey Walton (third, 132), Alex Tyska (third, 152), Travis Lindsey (170, third), Max Martinson (third, 182), Sterling Honeycutt (third, 220) and Jake Larsen (second, 285). Advancing for Nooksack Valley were Paul Newell (fourth, 120), Taylor Gardner (third, 126) and Jesse O'Bryan (fourth, 160) while moving on for Meridian was Neal Tilbury (fourth, 195).

The state wrestling championships start Friday, Feb. 15, in Tacoma.
