Blaine handles South Whidbey, advances to showdown with Nooksack Valley

Published: February 9, 2013

The Blaine girls' basketball team used pressure defense to build a large early lead and rolled to a 48-32 win against South Whidbey to stave off elimination during a second round consolation Class 1A Northwest District Tournament game Friday, Feb. 8, at Blaine High School.

The Borderites raced to a 14-4 first-quarter lead and extended their lead to 27-10 by halftime.

Breanna Chau scored a game-high 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Taylor V'Dovec added 13 points, and Mandy Hayes and Alexis McElwain each scored seven.

"We got going early," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. "We made 16 steals and had a lot in the first quarter to set us up with a good halftime lead."

Blaine outrebounded South Whidbey 39-20. V'Dovec hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds.

Blaine (17-6) faces Nooksack Valley next in a winner-to-tri-districts, loser-out game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Mountlake Terrace High School.

"They just got to understand that there is no tomorrow," Pike said of his Borderites.
