While Marsha Mansfield holds a flashlight, Nathan Fontana gingerly dips his finger below the surface of a holding pool to touch a giant sunflower star during Pier Peer at Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma. The event allows people of all ages to see and touch crabs, starfish and other marine life.

Parents and children can learn about marine creatures living in Puget Sound during a Pier Peer event from 7:30-9 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St., Tacoma.

Sponsored by the Seaport and Metro Parks Tacoma, participants will explore mysterious life below the docks with experienced naturalists.

There will be a chance to warm up at the end of the evening with hot cocoa. Each child requires one adult companion.

The program is for ages 8 and older, and the cost is $8. Registration is required. You can do so by contacting 253-591-6439 or going to metroparkstacoma.org.

The next pier in the Olympia area will be March 2. For more details, contact the South Sound Estuary Association at sseacenter.wordpress.com.
