Lummi girls fall 68-31, knocked out of postseason

Published: February 8, 2013

The Lummi girls' basketball team lost 68-31 to Lopez in the fifth-place game of the Class 1B Northwest District tournament Thursday, Feb. 7, at Mount Vernon Christian High School.

Lummi is eliminated from the postseason with the loss.

"Lopez jumped all over us with a tough man-to-man defense with bumping pressure on Dawn James and Samantha Wilson," Lummi coach Woody Bakke said in a phone interview. "We ended up in foul trouble early. That first quarter made a huge impact on the rest of the game."

Lummi (2-17) was led in scoring by James, who scored 13 points, and Halle Sturgeon, who scored six points.

Lummi was outscored 31-5 in the first quarter, but was able to regroup and was only outscored 37-26 in the final three quarters.

"We are extremely proud of the girls for how they responded to the adversity," Bakke said. "That really speaks volumes to the girls not giving up."

Bakke said Lena Buck and Wilson led the team on the court and were the glue that held the team together in the game.

"They played like champions on the court and are champions off the court," Bakke said. "We will really miss them. They kept the resolve going throughout."
