The Blaine boys' basketball team survived another day as it defeated Friday Harbor 59-45 in the consolation first round of the Class 1A Northwest District tournament Thursday, Feb. 7, at Blaine High School.
Blaine will advance to play at Meridian in the second consolation round on Friday, Feb. 8.
Blaine was led by Gabe Trump, who scored 27 points. Trump scored 32 points in his previous game on Tuesday, Feb. 6, against Mount Baker.
"Gabe has really been carrying us this whole week," Blaine coach Shaun Pile said in a phone interview. "He is hitting some incredible shots."
Blaine had a one-point lead at halftime and was only up 29-28. The Borderites had only a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth quarter.
"The fourth quarter we did a much better job with the trap and forcing turnovers and that really allowed us to pull away," Pile said.
The Borderites (5-17) outscored Friday Harbor 18-6 in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
Jericho Probadora added 11 points and Josiah Westbrook added nine points and nine assists. Zach Rector had four points and nine rebounds for Blaine.
Blaine hit eight 3-pointers; five were scored by Trump.
