Lynden boys' basketball team unanimous No. 1 choice in latest state poll

Published: February 7, 2013

The Lynden boys' basketball team was a unanimous pick at the top of the Associated Press Class 2A boys' basketball poll this week.

The Lions (19-1), who have sat atop the poll all season but had always split the first-place vote, received all 10 top votes from a statewide panel of sports writers and editors in this week's poll, after Renton suffered its first loss. Renton slid to No. 3 behind Pullman in the poll.

Anacortes (16-4) also moved up two places to No. 6 in the poll, while Sehome (16-4) got a vote but did not make the top 10.

Lynden opens the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament at home when it hosts Sultan at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8.

Lynden Christian (16-4) dropped two places to No. 5 in the Class 1A poll behind top-ranked Zillah after suffering a loss to Sehome last week. The Lyncs host Meridian in the Class 1A Northwest District semifinals at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7.

In the 1B poll, Lummi moved up from a fifth-place tie last week to sole possession of fourth place behind top-ranked Cusick. The Blackhawks will wrap up the 1B Northwest District Tournament this week before moving on to the tri-district tournament.

On the girls' side, Ferndale (19-2) moved up one spot to No. 6 in the Class 3A poll behind unanimously top-ranked Prairie. The Golden Eagles will play Glacier Peak at 6 p.m. on Friday at Lynnwood in the semifinals of the 3A Northwest District Tournament.

Burlington-Edison (17-3) was the only NWC representative in the 2A poll, but the Tigers dropped three places to No. 7 behind top-ranked Mark Morris.

Lynden Christian also dropped out of a fourth-place tie with Brewster in the 1A poll and is now ranked fifth behind No. 1 Cascade Christian. Blaine received three votes, but did not make the top 10. The Lyncs and Borderites will wrap up the 1A Northwest District Tournament this week and hope to move on to the tri-district tournament next week.

Elsewhere, Garfield (4A boys), Rainier Beach (3A boys), St. George's (2B boys), Mead (4A girls), Reardan (2B girls) and Colton (1B girls) retained the top spots in their respective polls.
