• Jessica Alvarez, 18, of Bellingham was one of six Distinguised Finalists for Prudential Spirit of Community awards in Washington state. The volunteer-service awards for middle- and high-school students nationwide are sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The top two winners in Washington were from Vancouver and Seattle.
• Joshua Godfrey of Ferndale was named to the 2012 fall-semester Dean's List at Northwest Nazarene University, in Nampa, Idaho.
• Jerome Schwartz, a 1999 graduate of Sehome High School, has written several episodes of the new TV show "Zero Hour," which premiers at 8 p.m. Feb. 14 on ABC. Schwartz wrote episodes five and 10, co-wrote episode seven, and received credit for the season-ending episode 13. He previously was a writer for the CBS show "Cold Case."
