Lummi girls earn key win to advance at district tournament

The Lummi girls' basketball team picked a right time to pick up its third win of the season.

The Blackhawks defeated Cedar Park Christian 50-45 in the consolation first round of the Class 1B Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Mountlake Terrace.

The win sends Lummi to the fifth-place game against the Lopez/Highland Christian wnnner at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, at Mount Vernon Christian.

"We are so proud," Lummi coach Woody Bakke said in a phone interview. "We set a lot of team and personal goals."

The Blackhawks took control of the game by outscoring Cedar Park Christian 22-12 in the third quarter. Dawn James led Lummi with 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Samantha Wilson scored nine points while Bella James and Halle Sturgeon each had eight points for Lummi.

"They played aggressive and played together," Bakke said.
