Turnovers and poor rebounding dug the Lummi girls' basketball team a deep first-half hole it could not get out of in a 74-30 loss at Mount Vernon Christian on Saturday, Feb. 2, in the first round of the Class 1B Northwest District Tournament.
Lummi (1-14) will attempt to extend its season on Tuesday, Feb. 5, when it faces a 7 p.m. elimination game at Mountlake Terrace Cedar Park Christian, which suffered a 34-29 loss to Grace Academy on Saturday.
"We had an abundance of turnovers, especially in the first half," Blackhawks coach Woody Bakke said in a phone interview. "Too many to count."
Lummi logged only 14 rebounds and shot 13 for 45 from the field for the game, as it was outscored 49-15 in the first half.
Despite the loss of Seaneen Roberts to injury, the Blackhawks' switch from a 2-3 to a 3-2 zone in the second half helped slow up the Mount Vernon Christian offensive attack and hold it to 25 second-half points, Bakke said.
Dawn James scored 17 points to lead the Blackhawks, while Samantha Wilson scored nine.
"We're gong to continue to work hard and work on our free throws, our shots around the key and our transition game to get better for Cedar Park Christian," Bakke said.
