Point guard Nicholas Kussman led the Whatcom Community College men's basketball team with 10 rebounds, big man Zach Stalin led the team with five assists and Kyle Impero scored 37 points to lead the Orcas to a big 78-58 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges victory over visiting Peninsula on Saturday, Feb. 2.
The win broke a tie for second place in the NWAACC North Division, as WCC (14-6, 6-2 NWAACC) moved into sole possession of the spot behind Edmonds.
Not only did Impero score 37, he had nine rebounds, two assists and a steal. Stalin joined him in double figures with 18 points.
"Kyle played extremely smart," WCC coach Chris Scrimsher said in a phone interview. "He could of taken a lot more shots, amazingly, but he played really smart, took good shots and got his teammates involved with good passes."
His teammates certainly played a big role in the win, as the Orcas out rebounded the conference's top rebounding team 51-33 and held Peninsula's leading scorer Xavier Bazile to three points - more than 15 below his season average.
"We frustrated them tonight," Scrimsher said.
WCC next travels to Skagit Valley College on Wednesday, Feb. 6.
