Olivia Halverson made a last second shot to give the Bellingham girls' basketball team a 41-40 win at Mount Baker in both teams' final regular season Northwest Conference game Friday, Feb. 1.
"Bellingham obviously wanted to get the win to make the playoffs and they were fired up," Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. "They had a good first half and we didn't have a lot of life in the second quarter. We knew we were in no matter what but we wanted something positive to go with."
Ellis said Halverson had three rebounds of her own shots and was able to hit the final shot with 1 second left.
The Red Raiders (11-10, 5-7 NWC) were led in scoring by Jenn Paul, who scored 10 points.
Emily Yost led the Mountaineers (9-11, 4-8 NWC) with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Emily Brandland added 12 points.
"Brandland hit back-to-back 3-pointers and that really got us going," Ellis said. "She fought hard and played well, especially for a freshman."
Mount Baker will play at Blaine on Monday, Feb. 4, in the first round of the class 1A Northwest District tournament. Bellingham qualified for a postseason spot against an opponent to be determined.
