Vikings make 2013 debut with 11-2 win

Third baseman Cheyenne Best drove in three runs and Jenna DeRosier scattered four hits in six innings pitched as Western Washington University opened its 2013 season with an 11-2 win over Brigham Young University Hawaii in first-day action Friday, Feb. 1, at the University of Hawaii Hilo Invitational Tournament.

Best was 2 for 4, driving in two runs in the Vikings' three-run third inning that gave them a 5-0 lead.

Jordan Walley hit a lead-off home run in the fifth and Amanda Flores had a two-run homer as WWU scored five times in the seventh. Best also scored a run in that frame with a single and Haylee Baker doubled across two more.

Catcher Jackie Rothenberger had two of the Vikings' 11 hits.

DeRosier walked two and struck out two in earning the victory. Anisa Wingsness pitched one inning of scoredless relief for WWU.
