Lynden's eight boys' basketball seniors have enjoyed plenty of special moments throughout their careers on the hardwood.

The Lions' final Northwest Conference home game against Meridian on Thursday, Jan. 31, provided seniors Josh Kraght, Kyle Mark, Zach Vis, John Shine, Matt Meyer, Marcus Fakkema, Dak Shagren and Bret DeGraaff with another memorable one - a win on senior night.

Lynden took an early lead and outscored Meridian by 10 points in the second quarter to run away with a 62-39 NWC win.

"It was senior night, and we have eight seniors, so it was nice to celebrate them in our last league home game," Lynden coach Brian Roper said in a phone interview. "I thought we were able to get out to a fast start in the first half."

Shagren scored a game-high 20 points. He also had team highs of seven rebounds and four assists.

"I thought Dak had a really solid night," Roper said. "I thought he played a complete game."

Seven out of Lynden's eight seniors scored. Kraght finished with two, Shine had eight points, Mark had three, Vis added eight, Meyer reached double digits with 12 and Fakkema had four points. DeGraaff was the only senior Lion to not put his name in the scoring column.

Although DeGraaff didn't score, his presence was felt.

"DeGraaff and Fakkema played good minutes for us off the bench tonight," Roper said. "I thought once the game got going up and down, that played into our favor and allowed us to get easy baskets."

Meridian was led by Edward Garcia's nine points. Spencer Blackburn and Logan Carlson each added eight points in the loss.

Lynden out-rebounded Meridian 32-17, which helped the Lions build on their first-half lead in the second half.

"We were able to get some second chance shots and some defensive rebounds," Roper said. "We had guys flying around for boards. That can be important for us."

Lynden (18-1, 11-0 NWC) plays its final Northwest Conference game at Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, Feb. 5, before starting the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament against Sultan at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in Lynden.

Meridian plays in the Class 1A District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb 5, against an opponent to be determined.
