LC, Ferndale girls inch up girls' basketball rankings

Published: January 31, 2013

The Lynden Christian girls' basketball team moved up three spots in the Class 1A poll, and the Ferndale girls moved up one in 3A in the latest Associated Press Washington state basketball rankings released on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The Lyncs (16-3) now find themselves tied with Brewster for fourth place in the 1A girls' rankings behind top-ranked Freeman. LC has already secured the Northwest Conference's top seed into the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament and will host Coupeville on Monday, Feb. 4, in the first round after closing out the regular season Friday, Feb. 1, at Sehome.

Ferndale (17-2) flipped places with Stanwood, moving up to No. 7 behind top-ranked Prairie in the 3A poll. The Golden Eagles close out the regular season Thursday, Jan. 31, at Anacortes and wait to see their first-round opponent in the 3A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Lynden (10-8) surprisingly just missed the top 10 in the 2A poll, as the Lions received 10 votes, while Blaine (14-5) received two votes in the 1A poll.

Burlington-Edison (16-2) was the only other Northwest Conference team ranked, as the Tigers moved up one spot in the 2A poll to fourth behind top-ranked Mark Morris.

On the boys' side, defending state champion Lynden (17-1) retained the top spot in the 2A poll. The Lions received seven of 10 first-place votes and 97 points from the statewide panel of sports writers and editors. Unbeaten Renton was second with the other three first-place nods and 93 points.

Despite having two games remaining in the regular season, the Lions have already secured the NWC's top seed to the 2A District 1/2 Tournament and will host a first-round game on Feb. 8.

Anacortes (14-4) moved up two places to No. 8 in the 2A poll, while Burlington-Edison (13-6) received a vote.

Defending 1A state champion Lynden Christian (15-4) held steady at No. 3 in the 1A poll, although there was a change in front of the Lyncs. Zillah (17-1) received four first-place votes to overtake Seattle Academy (18-0), which also received four first-place votes. LC received the other first-place nod.

The Lyncs already have wrapped up the top seed into the 1A Northwest District Tournament and will host a first-round game on Tuesday.

Lummi (15-3) moved back into the Class 1B top five and finds itself in a five-way tie for fifth with Christian Faith, Wellpinit, LaCrosse-Washtucna and Mountlake Terrace Cedar Park Christian behind top-ranked Cusik. The Blackhawks, who won the Northwest 1B League title, will host Highland Christian at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, in the first round of the 1B Northwest District Tournament.

Garfield and Rainier Beach were newly minted No. 1 teams in the 4A and 3A boys' rankings respectively, while St. George's remained No. 1 in 2B. Mead also was a new No. 1 in the girls' 4A rankings, while Reardan (2B) and Colton (1B) remained atop their respective girls' classifications.
