Thursday's Bellingham Herald featured an extensive Associated Press report on the declining numbers of those among us lucky enough to be union members. What goes unsaid in the piece is that this is a trend I believe accompanied by related societal effects such as wage stagnation, redistribution of wealth upward, a shrinking middle class, growing poverty. Unless these conditions are reversed, they will provide ample motivation and momentum for a resurgence of organized labor.
