Young ice skating duo sixth in juvenile competition at U.S. Figure Skating Championships

Caleb Niva, of Bellingham, and partner Gianna Buckley, of Seattle, recently skated at the 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Omahan, Neb.

The pair skated three times in the juvenile level. After the pattern dance they were in eighth place and after the free dance on Sunday, Jan. 27, they placed fifth to move into sixth place overall.

WESTERN RUGBY DEFEATS WASHINGTON

The Western Washington University rugby team defeated visiting University of Washington 57-0 in a Northwest Collegiate League opener on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Robert Boenish had three tries, Quinton Willms had two tries and Matt Jensen, Pat Phelps and Gio Trujillo each had one try. Willms also had seven conversions.

The Vikings, who went 3-3 at the National College Sevens Championships in December, have been able to gather recruits from as far away as Florida as well as provinces in Canada.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Jim Douglas had a hole-in-one on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Douglas used an 8-iron on the 129-yard No. 13 hole for his second career hole-in-one.
