The Whatcom Community College women's basketball team got huge games out of its backcourt to dominate on the boards and win a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges game at Shoreline on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Bree Park had a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Orcas (13-6, 6-1 NWAACC), while Erika Locker just missed a triple-double with eight rebounds and game highs in points (26) and assists (eight).
"We had very good numbers from our guards," WCC coach Sara Bergner said in a phone interview. "Erika was very tough, and Bree had a big night."
With big play from its guards, WCC was able to post a 45-29 advantage on the boards and jump out to a 34-20 halftime lead.
"We challenged them before the game to get in and get the rebounds, and they did a good job of that tonight," Bergner said. "We also made a defensive goal to hold them under 50 points, and we were able to do that. We're very happy about that."
Nathalie Gruber joined Park and Locker, who made six 3-pointers, in double figures with 12 points.
The Orcas start the second half of their conference season on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they host Peninsula.
"It's always interesting the first time through," Bergner said. "We've just got to continue to work on our weaknesses and get better. Hopefully the second time through, things will get even better."
