After debuting last week, the Ferndale girls' basketball team is starting to inch its way up the Class 3A ranks in the latest edition of the Associated Press Washington Basketball Prep Poll. The poll is conducted by a statewide panel of sports writers and editors and was released Wednesday, Jan. 23.
The Golden Eagles (15-2), who have won six straight games since dropping a pair in a holiday tournament, moved up two spots to No. 8 in the latest poll.
The only other Whatcom County team to crack the top 10 was Lynden Christian (13-3), which dropped two spots to No. 7 in the 1A poll, probably in response to a Jan. 14 loss to Ferndale.
Nooksack Valley (11-5) and Blaine (11-5) received three and two votes, respectively, but did not make the top 10 in the 1A poll, while Sehome (10-6) received one vote in the 2A poll.
Elsewhere in the Northwest Conference, Burlington-Edison (15-2) moved up one spot to No. 5 in the 2A poll.
Mt. Rainier (4A), Prairie (3A), Mark Morris (2A), Freeman (1A), Reardan (2B) and Colton (1B) all retained the top spots in their respective polls.
On the boys' side, Lynden maintained its grip on the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A, as the Lions (15-1) are on a nine-game win streak. Lynden received nine of 13 first-place votes in the poll to out-point unbeaten Renton 126-121.
Lynden Christian (12-4) remained at No. 3 in the 1A poll, though the Lyncs, who have won three straight since an overtime loss to Lynden on Jan. 11, received one of 10 first-place votes. Top-ranked Seattle Academy got seven, while No. 2 Zillah got two.
Anacortes (12-4) was the only other Northwest Conference team to be ranked or receive a vote, as the Seahawks moved into a 10th-place tie with Wapato in the 2A poll.
Lummi (12-3) received 12 votes but was two spots out of making the top five in 1B.
Bothell (4A), Lincoln (3A) and St. George's (2B) remained atop their respective rankings, while Cusick replaced LaCrosse-Washtucna as No. 1 in the 1B ranks.
